“Colonial America”
Today, I read the book, “Colonial America”
by Alan Taylor in the series of 'Very Short Introductions'. The author describes
the history of North America, colonized by Spain, France, and Britain. The
book's final chapter describes that the British Empire defeated the other two,
and the American colonies won the independence from the Britain finally.
Because I didn't know precisely about the era before Pilgrims, I read the part
with interest. I came to know that there were highly-socialized communities of
Native Americans. It is surprising that the Native Americans not only
communicated among themselves but also negotiated with the European
colonialists from various countries with patience. In North America, various
cultures, religions, and societies merged simultaneously, so that it is
impossible to simplify its history from one perspective. I think that the
effects of its complicated history remain in diversities among different States
in the U.S.A. Reading the New York Times; we can easily find that the governors
of different states show quite different attitudes to the same laws and
political movements. Considering the historical background, it is rational to
permit the diversity of each state at some level. I cannot help respecting a
historian who can summarize such a complicated history and show hints about how
to think of our presence.
